J Strength Cond Res 35(8): 2179–2186, 2021—Previous investigations of 1 repetition maximum (1RM BP) have been either descriptive or explored a limited number contributing variables. The purpose this study was to investigate the interplay between structural, technical, neuromuscular factors relation 1RM BP Thirteen national international level male powerlifters (26 ± 9 years, 178 6 cm, 93.8 9.9 kg) visited laboratory twice. Anthropometric ultrasound measures were taken on first visit, whereas (voluntary activation level, isokinetic strength, kinetic, kinematic, electromyographic measurements during recorded second visit. Correlation multiple regression used contribution variables corrected for body mass using Wilks coefficient. highest degree association shown structural (lean bone mass, brachial index, arm circumference, agonist cross-sectional area [CSA]; r = 0.58–0.74) followed by (elbow shoulder flexion strength; 0.57–0.71), technical did not correlate with (r ≤ 0.49). showed that lean isometric torque predicted 59% common variance BP. These data suggest sample powerlifters, contribute such as CSA, strength elbow flexors being greatest predictors performance.

The Effects of Bench Press Variations in Competitive Athletes on Muscle Activity and Performance

The aim of the study was to compare the EMG activity performing 6RM competition style bench press (flat bench-wide grip) with 1) medium and narrow grip widths on a flat bench and 1) inclined and declined bench positions with a wide grip. Twelve bench press athletes competing at national and international level participated in the study. EMG activity was measured in the pectoralis major, anterio...

Isometric Unilateral Bench Press

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of two different bar diameters on neuromuscular activation and strength. The bar diameters used reflected a standard Olympic bar (28 mm (1.1 inch); THIN) and a larger fat bar (51 mm [2 inch]; THICK). Eighteen healthy men (age 25.06 1 years) were assessed for their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) during a unilateral isometric bench press...

Training leading to repetition failure enhances bench press strength gains in elite junior athletes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance of training leading to repetition failure in the performance of 2 different tests: 6 repetition maximum (6RM) bench press strength and 40-kg bench throw power in elite junior athletes. Subjects were 26 elite junior male basketball players (n = 12; age = 18.6 +/- 0.3 years; height = 202.0 +/- 11.6 cm; mass = 97.0 +/- 12.9 kg; mean +/- S...

Relationship between throwing velocity, muscle power, and bar velocity during bench press in elite handball players.

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between ball-throwing velocity during a 3-step running throw and dynamic strength, power, and bar velocity during a concentric-only bench-press exercise in team-handball players. METHODS Fourteen elite senior male team-handball players volunteered to participate. Each volunteer had power and bar velocity measured during a conce...
